Presentation of Terre et Peuple

Terre et Peuple (Land and People) is a French ultranationalist movement founded in 1994 by Pierre Vial. Self-styled "European identity resistance", Terre et Peuple "defends and promotes the ethnocultural identity of Europe". The movement's propaganda material is more explicit on its aims, considering "Europe as the Land of the Europeans", the land of the "African peoples" being Africa. Here "the Europeans" are the "Celts, Germans, Vikings and Latins".
Pierre Vial (b. 1942) is a founding member of the GRECE (Groupement de recherche et d'études pour la civilisation européenne - Research and study group for the European civilization, aka Nouvelle Droite - New Right) and a former member of the extreme-rightist parties FN (1988-1998) and MNR (1998-2001). Vial's "neo-paganic" ideology mixes paganism and white supremacism.
The movement is organized in regional groups called bannières (lit., banners), including one group in Belgium and another in Spain (Tierra y pueblo). The movement organizes every year a Community Assembly, a Round Table and a Summer School called Journées du Soleil (The Sun's Days).

Flag of Terre et Peuple

The "historical" flag of Terre et Peuple is horizontally divided white-red-blue (3:4:7) with a white edelweiss flower placed over the red and blue stripes (movement's website). The three colors represent "the three functions".
The flag is used in different events (meetings, street demonstrations) in which Terre et Peuple is involved, for instance, the nationalist street demonstration organized on 8 May 2011 in Paris (photos) (not to be confused with the "Joan of Arc's parade" organized on 1 May by the FN).

The edelweiss was chosen as the movement's symbol since it grows at high elevation, on places with difficult or even hazardous access. Accordingly, courage and perseverance are required to meet it, which are the characteristics of the struggle led by the movement. Moreover, the edelweiss is the emblem of the Alpine troops of the French Army, used for instance on the badge of the 11th Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins.
The edelweiss is white ("edelweiss" meaning "white and noble") White has always been considered by European peoples as the symbol of purity, sovereignty and elevation, physical and moral as well. The edelweiss is the image of the legacy bequeathed from the ages by our fathers and that we aim at transferring ourselves to our sons and to their own sons. Terre et Peuple emphasizes the edelweiss, seen as the reflexion of the North Star on the Earth, as opposed to the adoration of the golden calf.
